1950s hero Cliff Jacques passes on

HE WAS to Johannesburg Rangers, the glamour club of South African soccer in the 1950s, what Steven Gerrard means to Liverpool today.

Following a period of failing health in the past three months, Cliff Jacques, "The Golden Midfielder", died last week at the age of 86.

He made three overseas tours to Australia and Britain with South African teams when the game in this country was still played at an amateur level. He also represented South Africa at home in numerous tests.

The Springboks, as they were called, trounced Australia in all five international matches in 1956 at the Brisbane and Sydney cricket grounds and later beat England and Ireland in what were termed amateur internationals. Rangers were the darlings of the local soccer community under the guidance of keeper and manager Lubbe Snoyman, and none more so than Jacques.
