On his website last week he confirmed having the surgery. He did not indicate how long he expected to be out of action.
"I just wanted to update you on my back injury that has caused me a few problems recently," said Goosen.
"I met my spinal consultant again last week and we decided that the best treatment was for me to have back surgery this week.
"The operation has gone well and I will now stay in hospital for a few days before recuperating at home."
"The Goose" last played at the PGA Championship and ended down the leaderboard in a tie for 48th. His best finishes on the US PGA tour this season are two 10th- place finishes at the US Open and the Canadian Open.
Goosen said the lay-off would give him time to recover and spend time with his family.
"I am looking forward to returning to the tour fully fit and, in the meantime, I plan to put my feet up, enjoy watching the golf on TV and spend more time with Tracy and my children." Goosen lies in a respectable 23rd on the European tour money list, courtesy of good tournaments in SA in January, in addition to his US Open payout for the co-sanctioned major.
