Safa yet to talk to Birds over coach

MOROKA Swallows have yet to be approached by the South African Football Association over a compensation arrangement for coach Gordon Igesund.

The national association appointed Igesund as head coach of Bafana Bafana on Saturday, but did so without first asking Swallows how much they will have to pay to release him from his contract with The Birds that runs until June 2014.

Safa has yet to make contact with the club, which has left chief executive Leon Prins bemused.

"It is very difficult to talk about a compensation claim when we have yet to be approached by Safa," Prins said. "But Safa are very much aware of Gordon's contract situation with us, he was completely upfront with them about it, so I should imagine I will be getting a call soon."

Safa's actions have placed Swallows in a difficult position because having appointed the people's favourite to the position of head coach, the club will not want to be seen to be standing in Safa's way. However, given the length of Igesund's contract, they will be due a sizeable settlement.

Meanwhile, Prins said that the club will release a statement in the coming days with regards to who Igesund's successor will be.

"We know which direction we want to go in, but we first have to talk to the players and tell them before we make it public," he said.

At this stage it appears that assistant coach Zeca Marques is the front-runner for the position, with the club likely to look internally to continue the excellent work laid down by Igesund.
