Jozi south shows off

GOLD Reef City in Johannesburg is set to host what boxing aficionados believe will be just what the doctor ordered for followers of the noble sport at the casino on June 26.

BRD Promotions boss Manny Fernandez has dubbed his 48-round, eight-bout box-and-dine tournament "Just the Beginning".

"The name says it all," he said. "Remember most top-name fighters came from this (southern) part of Jozi."

Rising stars from the south who will be in action are Zan Jonker, Zane Mundell, Sylvester Zaki and Oscar Chauke.

Jonker will fight Master Mangalazda in a junior welterweight bout over four rounds while Mundell will meet Jeremia Joshua in a welterweight fight, also over four rounds. Zaki will fight Theo Mpakane in a junior middleweight bout over six rounds while Chauke and Themba Lesiba will top the bill with a six-rounder in the featherweight division.

Chauke is a former SA and WBF junior featherweight champion while Lesiba is a junior featherweight campaigner who tried unsuccessfully to dethrone Macbute Sinyabi two years ago.
