TIME-HONOURED: Double amputee Oscar Pistorius

OSCAR Pistorius said his inclusion among Time magazine's 100 most influential people in the world came as a big surprise to him.

"(I got the inclusion) because of the great team behind me, I won't let them down. We have the Olympics coming in July, I'm working hard to make them happy.

"I will be off to Europe in the next few days for a series of competitions," said Pistorius, adding that he wanted to set up a foundation to help the needy people of Africa.

"I have been working with land mine victims in Africa. I will be starting a foundation before the end of the year to help people in Africa with prosthetic legs."

Double amputee Pistorius made a name for himself after winning a battle against the world athletics governing body the IAAF in May 2008 when the Court of Arbitration for Sport cleared him to compete in able-bodied championships.

He made history in 2011 when he became the first amputee to win a track medal at the world athletics championships in South Korea. He was part of Team South Africa's 4x400m relay team that claimed silver.

The man also known as the Blade Runner is hoping to become the first double amputee competitor at the Olympics in London.

Pistorius has already dipped under the Olympic qualifying standard in the men's 400m sprint after he clocked 45.20 seconds in Pretoria last month.
