TOP names in swimming, including Chad le Clos and Wendy Trott, will be in action during the SA National Aquatic Championships in Durban from April 16 to 22.

The event, which will also double up as official 2012 London Olympic trials, takes place at the Kings Park Aquatics Centre in Durban from today until Sunday.

Swimmers are expected to produce top-drawer performances to post Olympic A qualifying times to be eligible for final team for the London Games.

Heerden Herman and Riaan Schoeman have already achieved Olympic A qualifying times during the SA International Invitational meet earlier this year.

They will be hoping to repeat or better their times - in order to secure a spot on the Olympic team - as required by South African Sport Confederation and Olympic Committee.

Herman, who clocked 15:06.11 in the 1 500m freestyle event to qualify, will come up against the likes of Myles Brown and Mark Randal.

Schoeman's time was 4:16.02 in the 400m individual medley but should brace himself for stiff opposition from fellow Durbanite Le Clos.

Le Clos is in the lead with three Olympic A qualifying times under his belt, having raced to a 52.17 in the 100m butterfly at the All Africa Games, a 1:55.07 in the 200m butterfly at the Fina World Championships and a 4:14.93 in the 400m individual medley at the SA International Invitation meet.

Some of the top swimmers who will participate in Durban include Roland Schoeman, Cameron van der Burgh and Darian Townsend.

Swimming SA president Jace Naidoo said: "The SA aquatics athletes are all champions in the eyes of Swimming SA and we trust that they will show the type of character, combined with their athletic skills , to become role models to our sports-loving fans across all communities in our country ahead of the London Olympic Games."
