A NEW school soccer tournament, which is spearheaded by the government and pay TV station M-Net through SuperSport, has been launched.

The South African Schools Shootout got under way in Orange Groove, Johannesburg, at the weekend, and is geared at producing future Bafana Bafana stars.

The tournament, which was initially developed by the PSL, is endorsed by the South African Schools Football Association (Sasfa). It also has the support of Safa.

Sasfa deputy president Innocent Sirovha said: "The role played by our government in the development of sport is highly appreciated."

Twelve schools will compete for the coveted trophy over six match days, with 22 matches to be broadcast live on SuperSport.

The Shootout was born after Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga and Minister of Sport and Recreation Fikile Mbalula agreed to work together in the arena of school sport.

Mbalula and Motshekga recently agreed that the Department of Basic Education would take responsibility for school football leagues.

Together, the departments decided that 2012 would be the year for a mass roll-out, incorporating 28000 schools across the country.

The 12 schools in the inaugural shootout are: Phagameng High School (Limpopo), Leruntse Lesedi Secondary School (North West), Shayamoya Area Secondary School (KwaZulu-Natal), Kagisho Comprehensive Secondary School (Free State), Western Cape Sports School (Western Cape), Kuyasa Senior Secondary School (Eastern Cape), Mohloli Secondary School (Gauteng), Benny's Sports Development and Academy (Limpopo), Mahlatsi High School (Mpumlanga), Groutville High School (KwaZulu-Natal), Paballelo High School (Northern Cape) and Rietvale High School (Northern Cape).

The fixtures will take place over six days until March 31 at Sacred Heart College in Johannesburg and Benoni High School.
