Gelant beats best in 12km

ELROY Gelant is geared up for the IAAF World Indoor Games in Turkey on March 9 and 10 after beating a star-studded line-up in Potchefstroom over the weekend.

Gelant, the 2009 World Student Games 5000m bronze medallist, won the 12km SA cross country trials senior men's event on Saturday in 34 minutes, 49 seconds.

He beat superstars like Boy Soke, Lungisa Mdadelwa, Kgosi Tsosane, Isaac Mbuyane, Jeffrey Gwebu, Sibusiso Nzima and Stephen Mokoka. Mokoka, who finished 18th overall in 36:15, won the BestMed half marathon in Pretoria earlier in the day.

"This is a great achievement, considering I came back to Potchefstroom last week from holiday in George (Western Cape)," Gelant said. "I have been training hard and hope to be in the best of shape in two weeks' time ahead of the World Indoor Games. I want to come back home with a medal from Turkey."
