THE third annual Jacob Zuma Karate Cup will take place in Mbizana, Eastern Cape this weekend, organisers announced yesterday.
Shihan Peter "Poison" Thage, publicist for the South African Kyokushin-Kai Karate Organisation Matsushima style, said they will use the event to select a team for the World Cup in Japan next year. He said the boys' weight divisions are Under-60kg, U-70kg, U-80kg and open. The girls' divisions are U-60kg, U-70kg and open.
The tournament, named after the president, will take place at the Wild Coast Sun and Casino on Saturday and Sunday. Thage said the Presidency has confirmed that Zuma will attend the tournament.
"The support we are getting from the government is highly appreciated. Government is supporting us with our initial preparations for the 2014 World Cup that will be hosted here in South Africa."
