MOROKA Swallows maintained their proud record over Mamelodi Sundowns in knockout competitions when they flew into the Telkom Knockout quarterfinals via a 3-0 pasting.

The Dube Birds hammered Sundowns at Dobsonville Stadium on Saturday evening through goals by Lefa Tsutsulupa, Lerato Chabangu and Siyabonga Nomvethe.

With the result Swallows maintained their excellent cup record against "Bafana baStyle", as they have not lost any of the last 10 knockout games between the two sides, dating back to 1989.

Sundowns were more dominant in the early stages with Birds goalie Greg Etafia working overtime. But Swallows captain Tsutsulupa opened the scoring with a brilliant goal off a pass from Chabangu on 37 minutes.

Calvin Marlin then donated a goal to Swallows after he completely missed a cross from a corner kick that was shepherded into the net by Chabangu in the 65th minute. Marlin's nightmarish game continued after Oscar Machapa's shot rebounded off the former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper for Nomvethe to score.

Swallows general manager Sipho Xulu said: "We are challenging for the league but also want to win at least one trophy for our fans. Sundowns walloped us 4-0 in the league last month, we wanted to restore our pride."

* At the nearby Orlando Stadium earlier on the same evening, Orlando Pirates beat Black Leopards 2-1 in a game where Benni McCarthy score his second goal of the season against Lidoda Duvha.

McCarthy netted the opener in the 24th minute

Benson Mhlongo, who made a return to the field after being out injured since October 2009, created the second goal for Rudolf Bester. Moses Kwena pulled one back in the 89th minute.

A Bukasa Kasonga own goal gave Bidvest Wits a 1-0 win over AmaZulu while Santos defeated Maritzburg United by the same margin.
