DAC, UJ runners host Soweto 'four in one'

THE University of Johannesburg Soweto campus and Diepkloof Athletics Club have organised a four-in-one event scheduled for October 30.

DAC chairperson Hamilton Kungoane said the main event of the day is a half marathon. There will also be a 10km road race, 5km fun run and street mile.

Various bodies and companies, including Uvuko Civils, Richmark Holdings, Rugby Legends South Africa and Nqoba Business Enterprise have come on board to assist DAC in the event.

Kungoane said they were also negotiating with the University of Johannesburg's Soweto campus to form a partnership to develop road running.

"We are happy the university has provided us with a facility. There are many young athletes that we believe can benefit a great deal from the partnership.

"The idea is to see the university getting involved in community development projects here in Diepkloof and surrounding areas."

Kungoane said they were expecting more than 2000 people to take part. "We have already started with an awareness campaign at various schools in Soweto and the support we are getting from the community is wonderful," he said.

Some of the top runners who are regulars at this event include Shadrack Hoff, Tshamano Setone, Lesotho's Mamorallo Tjoka and Jeffrey Gwebu.

Entries will be accepted at the university's premises on October 29 from 9am to 6pm and on race day between 4am and 5.30am.
