FORMER athlete Sam Mlangeni has commended Bonitas Medical Fund for coming to the rescue of the City2City Marathon that is run between Pretoria and Jozi.

The medical aid company was this week named as new sponsor of this oldest of ultra-marathons, which has been in existence for more than 104 years. More than 10000 runners will take part in this year's race on September 18 from Centurion to Jozi. Besides the 50km event, there is also a 21.1km marathon and 10km road race.

"The arrival of Bonitas in athletics is a commendable one. City2City Marathon has a rich history and we are happy the event has been saved," said Mlangeni. "City2City Marathon has a massive profile, it is one marathon that attracts some of the top runners from Zimbabwe, Lesotho and Namibia.

"We will see some of the best runners in South Africa like Fusi Nhlapo, Brian Zondi, Farwa Mentoor and Riana van Niekerk."

Mlangeni is also happy that the communities in Pretoria and Johannesburg will benefit from this marathon organised by Central Gauteng and Gauteng North provinces. Two charities, the Dunduzela Day and Night Care Centre in Pretoria and Bethel Home of Care in Diepsloot were each given R22 500 by the organisers.

Central Gauteng Athletics president James Moloi said: "We are happy the City2City Marathon is once more becoming a big event after we were able to secure funding.

"It has generated a lot of interest from both the young and old people. We urge our people to go to the sports shops and our provincial structures in Germiston and Pretoria (to register)."

Runners can download the entry form on www.city2citymarathon. co.za or enter online at www.entrytime.com.

Meanwhile, the Soweto Marathon will be run on November 6.
