Mweene's star shines brightest

FREE State Stars' Zambian goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene was last night named the club's Player of the Season and pocketed R80,000 at the side's 2010-11 awards in Midrand.

Said Mweene after receiving the award: "... I want to thank the management, fellow players, technical staff and our supporters for this award. We did not win anything but I strongly believe we laid a solid foundation to challenge for (league) honours in the new season."

The Players' Player of the Season award and R40,000 went to Thabo Matlaba.

The Rookie of the Season award was jointly won by Boitumelo Sekgobela and Thabo Matlaba, while Alain Lebyane got Mike Mokoena's Chairperson award.

Defender Mhamha Pumlani was presented with the Most Disciplined Player of the Season award at the event that was also attended by Sport and Recreation Minister Fikile Mbalula and Safa vice-president Danny Jordaan.

Mokoena said: "Our sponsors Bonitas Medical Fund are fully behind us, and there is no way we can't challenge for the league title with their unwavering support and that of our fans."
