Rooney's phone hacked

LONDON - England striker Wayne Rooney said yesterday police had shown him documents indicating his phone may have been hacked.

Newspapers have reported that the Manchester United player is the latest of several public figures whose voicemail messages may have been intercepted by journalists at the News of the World. The tabloid wrote several exclusive stories about him in 2005 and 2006.

"Scotland Yard detectives came to see me earlier and showed me some documents, looks like a newspaper has hacked into my phone," Rooney said on his Twitter feed Wazzaroon08.

"Gonna get my lawyers to deal with phone hacking until end of season," he said in a subsequent message.

Rooney's spokesperson Ian Monk confirmed that Wazzaroon08 was Rooney's genuine Twitter feed, but declined to comment further.

Earlier this month, the newspaper apologised to eight people including actress Sienna Miller for hacking into their voicemail messages in search of stories.
