Mabuza stamps his authority

IT HAS been a long time since fight fans in this North West town saw top-flight boxing, but the quality of boxing displayed on Saturday night more than made up for the wait.

Promoter Branco Milenkovic staged a tournament dubbed "Redemption", which featured eight bouts at The University of North West and fans left the hall satisfied with what they had witnessed.

Silence "African Spice" Mabuza took on Lwazi Mzolisa in the bantamweight, which was scheduled for eight rounds. But Mabuza was so dominant that in the third round Mzolisa went down three times, prompting the referee to stop the fight to prevent further embarrassment for Mzolisa.

Mabuza showed his experience against the energetic fighter and stamped his authority early on. He bullied his opponent and only referee Philip Durandt's intervention saved Mzolisa further punishment.

In another lopsided affair, Jeffrey "Mongoose" Mathebula easily defeated Siviwe Hasheni with a second-round knockout.

Although Hasheni showed courage and bravery against Mathebula, Nick Durandt's charge was simply too good for him.

With the crowd of about a 1000 people cheering him on, the Limpopo native moved swiftly and landed some good punches.

Maybe supporters felt a bit cheated that the fight had to end as early as the second round, because it was an entertaining clash.

That it had to end so early must have left many disappointed but Mathebula was simply too good for his opponent.
