Once again, allow me to blast our not-so-good public broadcaster, the SABC. This entity claims independence but that's blue lies.
They are currently running a marathon or series of OR Tambo's Memoirs in the name of Year of OR Tambo.
This is sheer abuse of state entities by the ANC government because the man was a political activist representing a certain view of a certain constituency. I see this as a strategic manoeuvre by the ANC to rehabilitate its depleted and dilapidated public stature.
Why don't we have a year of Prof Mangaliso Sobukwe, Bantubonke Biko or others? Azania is rich with liberation icons and picking as if he or she is holier than others isn't a safe option. The excuse that OR Tambo would be doing 100 years this year is shallow and myopic.
It must be noted that it is not the Year of OR Tambo to all of us but the SABC is for all of us, so some sense of neutrality in the SABC needs to be projected.
We aren't dancing to the same drum here. Let it be known that I have nothing against the legacy of OR Tambo. I'm just a member of a broader, diverse society.
If the SABC is really into the praising and eulogising of struggle stalwarts, then let them do it across the spectrum. Keep left as I keep right.
