Good news for soccer

TEAM DEFEAT: Portsmouth player Aaron Mokoena
TEAM DEFEAT: Portsmouth player Aaron Mokoena

SO another big-name player will ply his trade in the Premier Soccer League next season.

Aaron "Mbazo" Mokoena will play club football at perennial underachievers Wits - which is good for the PSL.

Mokoena is not your player from next door. He is a high-profile footballer and his presence in the Premiership will add another dimension to the already celebrated PSL.

The former Bafana Bafana skipper is coming home after a frustrating spell at cash-strapped English League One club Portsmouth. He is reported to be owed a large amount of money at Fratton Park and this could be what forced the former Jomo Cosmos player to move to Milpark.

Mokoena will be the second high-profile player to join the Premiership in two seasons after Benni McCarthy joined multiple champions Orlando Pirates last term.

McCarthy, who was already written off in some quarters long before he kicked a ball for Pirates, made his detractors eat humble pie with a virtuoso performance that helped The Buccaneers to shine.

Mokoena will find himself in a similar situation, but we say go out there Mbazo and prove your critics wrong.

We should embrace stars who are coming home to impart their international experience to youngsters in the PSL instead to criticising them.

Steven Pienaar is also not ruling out the possibility of playing in the PSL in future.

It will be good for the game and image of the PSL to have our international stars back home.
