Welcome move

THE national education qualifications body Umalusi will explain the standardisation procedure to the public next Monday.

It will break with traditional practice by examinations boards throughout the world by explaining its policies and activities around the matric exams.

This is a good step as it will neutralise the unfavourable criticism that has plagued it since the results of the Class of 2010 were made public.

Rumours of topping low marks and undeserved passes have marred the results.

There were mutterings about Umalusi kowtowing to the politicians at the expense of our children. Our past legacy of an autocratic government that operated in secrecy has made us wary of public entities that are not answerable to us.

The parlous state of education has made the public demand a role in the education system. We welcome the light that will be shed on the matter.
