Management at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) says the academic programme is continuing despite protests reported at various campuses of the institution.

Kaamini Reddy spokesperson at UJ said there had been “student activity” at all its campuses. Reddy said protests had been in small groups but the university had already deployed security personnel as it was having its graduation this week.

“Our academic programme is continuing‚” she said.

Earlier‚ student at the Soweto and Auckland Park campuses told TMG Digital that a protesting group had disrupted lectures and forced everyone to go outside.

“The removed us from class and they are now heading to the library. We do not know what is going to happen there‚” one of the students said.

UJ students returned from a week’s break and classes started as normal this morning until they were disrupted at midday as protests for the #FeesMustFall continued across the country. The campaign has been marked by destruction of property at various institutions.

Last week‚ students began violent protests at the University of Witwatersrand and other universities following an announcement by the Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande that fees at universities would rise by a maximum 8%. However‚ Nzimande said fees for students qualifying for funding under the National Student Financial Aid Scheme‚ as well as the so-called missing middle‚ would not increase in 2017. — TMG Digital
