Cop shot and robbed of gun at Athlone voting station

A police officer stationed at a voting station in Athlone‚ Cape Town sustained a gunshot wound‚ police said on Thursday.

 According to police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Andrè Traut ‚ the officer was attacked by four armed suspects and was robbed of his service pistol.

 “The member sustained a gunshot wound and was admitted to hospital in a stable condition. The suspects fled the scene in a silver Toyota Avanza and are yet to be arrested‚” Traut said.

 “The second member stationed at the voting station at the time of the attack was not harmed in the incident.”

Western Cape provincial commissioner Lieutenant-General Khombinkosi Jula said that SAPS officials on duty will not be deterred from ensuring safety and security‚ and will remain focused on their mandate in spite of ruthless criminals’ activities.

 On Wednesday‚ an elderly woman caught in the crossfire of a suspected gang shooting in Manenberg‚ Cape Town was rushed to hospital after a bullet struck her.

The 61-year-old‚ who has not yet been named by police‚ was reportedly walking to a shop shortly after 10am when she was shot in the vicinity of an election polling station.

The bullet struck her in her left side and she was taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

A 22-year-old male suspect was taken in for questioning.
