The sentencing of the fourth man who was part of a gang which raped and murdered her teenage daughter Valencia has ended a chapter in Sylvia Farmer’s life which she had wanted to close for a very long time.

"He is off the street and out of our community. I am happy about that," said an emotional Farmer hours after a father of four was sentenced to 23 years behind bars for his role in her daughter's brutal killing.

Elmario Maasdorp entered a plea agreement after being behind bars since his arrest in September last year.

This was after evidence was received by police confirming his involvement.

He was 22 when he and Glenville Faro, Russel van Wyk and Franklin Roberts – who are already behind bars – raped, sodomised and stabbed the 14-year-old after a night of drinking at an Eersteriver shebeen.

More than two decades is not enough considering that he took her daughter away from her forever, Farmer said.

"It has been bothering me that this man is a father of four young children. I am also a parent. But he killed one of mine. He had no right to do that to my child," she said.

"But today I will take the 23 years. I am ready to move on with my life. There are better things ahead for me and my son. I know that."

Maasdorp was among those arrested following the brutal attack in 1999, but charges were withdrawn as there was not enough evidence against him.

After his arrest last year he confessed that all four had repeatedly raped and sodomised the teenager.

She was stabbed 53 times.

Valencia was found naked hours later by residents, crouching in a passage of the deserted house.

After managing to tell police who her attackers were, she later died in Tygerberg Hospital.
