Huawei announces new CEO for South African operation

Global information and communications technology (ICT) giant Huawei has named Steven Wu as the new CEO for its South African operation.

Wu, who who has been with the company since 1999 has held a number of management positions within the organisation, including that of CEO of Huawei Technologies Africa and board director of Huawei European Subsidiary.

The ICT giants Huawei's brand awareness in South Africa rose from 26% in 2013 to 86% in 2014.

“Huawei will continue to improve network coverage and quality for South African telecom operators, and will continue to work closely with all stakeholders to support the deployment of the National Broadband Network in South Africa,”  the group CEO Wu said.

“As the second largest economy in Africa, South Africa is an important market for Huawei. Currently we have around 1000 employees in South Africa. In the next 5 years, we will increase the staff in South Africa by 50% to support our fast-growing operations.

Last year the group shipped around 1 million smartphones in South Africa and in 2015, they plan to double the figure.
