A routine search at Beitbridge Border Post on Monday unveiled gold with an estimated value of R24-million and copper cables worth about R14 000.

When the occupants of a Toyota Quantum microbus tried to flee the scene of a search‚ South African Revenue Services officials gave chase. They abandoned the vehicle at Waterpoort‚ Limpopo and fled on foot.

An inspection of the vehicle — under the supervision of the South African Police Service (SAPS) — revealed 52kg in gold bars and 279kg of copper hidden in false compartments.

The recovered metals are currently being processed at the SAPS laboratories.
