Talk of deal in Nxasana inquiry debacle

Now that the inquiry into his fitness for office has been canned‚ resignation is the only option for Mxolisi Nxasana’s speedy exit.

Monday’s last-minute cancellation of the hearings fuelled speculation that a deal had been stitched up to allow him to leave the position of national director of public prosecutions without answering serious allegations against him.

Inquiry chairman Nazeer Cassim SC took many by surprise when said he had received a call from the Presidency “in the early hours of this morning“‚ and he was told to “cease” the inquiry.

A Presidency’s statement on Monday said little other than that Mr Nxasana and the president were “engaging“.

Sources last night said Mr Nxasana could resign within the month.
