ECONOMIC Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema has accused the ANC of betraying former national police commissioner Jackie Selebi in favour of a "self-confessed white murderer".

Malema was addressing members of the media outside Selebi's Waterkloof, Pretoria, home after paying his respects alongside other party leaders yesterday.

"The ANC has sold out one of their own for a self- confessed white murderer. Comrade Jackie will not be the last . many others are yet to be swallowed by a pig which eats its own children," he said.

Malema was referring to Selebi's corruption charges brought on by his controversial relationship with convicted drug dealer Glenn Agliotti. In 2006, Agliotti was arrested in connection with the murder of businessman Brett Kebble.

He was, however, acquitted on the charges. Agliotti was offered indemnity in exchange for his testimony against Selebi, who was sentenced to 15 years in jail the same year. Malema said the ANC abandoned Selebi during his trial, but behaved differently during President Jacob Zuma's trial.

He said the Selebi family should not have allowed the ANC to pay for the funeral costs.

"These people humiliated comrade Jackie. What pains us the most is that a self-confessed murderer was let off the hook in exchange for a black leader," he said.

Zuma will not attend Selebi's funeral as he is leaving for the African Union meeting in Ethiopia.

Malema arrived flanked by other EFF leaders including spokesman Mbuyiseni Ndlozi and Dali Mpofu.

Malema said they had not come for cheap politics but to pay their respects to a struggle veteran.

Cars were parked outside as mourners walked inside, among them family friend Tim Williams, who also served as acting police commissioner after Selebi's suspension in 2008.

Family spokesman Nthato Selebi said since his uncle died last Friday they had been receiving incredible support from friends and those who worked with him.

Nthato said the family has learnt to cope with controversial comments about his uncle in the same way they had coped during his trial.

"We can only remember him as the person we loved and cared for."

He said a memorial service will be held at the Pretoria Showgrounds at 5pm on Thursday. The funeral service will take place on Saturday at the NG Kerk in Moreleta, Pretoria, at 8am.
