Four officers held for corruption

Four police officers have been arrested for corruption after allegedly demanding money from a truck owner whose driver was found in possession of a stolen vehicle, Gauteng police said on Friday.

The officers, all constables, were arrested at the Hekpoort police station around 7pm on Thursday when they reported for duty, Lt-Col Lungelo Dlamini said.

They stopped the truck, which was travelling towards Rustenburg, during an operation early that morning, searched it and allegedly found bicycles and a motorbike.

The motorbike had been reported stolen in Parkview, north of Johannesburg, Dlamini said. The bicycles were also thought to be stolen.

"Police officers took the truck to the police station and summoned the owner of the truck to the station.

"On arrival at the station, it is alleged that the officers demanded money. The owner of the truck reported them and they were later arrested when they resumed their duties," he said.

They would appear in the Krugersdorp Magistrate's Court on Monday.
