FET college bungles matrics registration

AT LEAST 20 students at Advisor Progressive College, a further education and training (FET) centre in Witbank, Mpumalanga, were either not registered to write exams, not registered for all subjects or registered for the wrong subjects.

Mpho Lingwati registered for four subjects but will only write two.

"I improved my English, life science, maths and physical science. But I cannot write maths and science."

His mother Sanna said she was seeking legal opinion.

"The school offered us a refund, but we do not want it."

She paid R10000 for the year.

School director Joseph Sebotse admitted there had been a problem with the registration.

"There was a mistake at our exam centre, but we have sent the list of students with problems to the circuit office," he said.

Candidates have three years to rewrite their matric examinations.

The education department said students and parents have to ensure colleges are not only registered but also registered to offer matric.

Gauteng education spokesman Charles Phahlane said last year they charged six schools for not being registered.

"When it comes to FET colleges, we hand them over to the Department of Higher Education and Training to deal with them."
