Hanged woman mystery

"We will in future have a unique identification for the breastfeeding mothers"

A NORTHERN Cape family is grieving after the body of their daughter was found hanging from a tree in Kimberley.

Keneilwe Kgopodithata, 28, of Perth village in Kuruman, was admitted in Kimberley Hospital on February 1 along with her newborn baby

The baby was ill with sores in the mouth and throat. Kgopodithata was allowed to be with the child.

Keneilwe was found hanging from a tree on February 18.

Last Thursday, the family buried her and were left wondering how did she go missing from the hospital and eventually meeting her death. According to hospital staff, she was last seen on February 10.

Neither the hospital staff nor her family knew of her whereabouts until a neighbour spotted her decomposed body in a tree near Rendelsham Road, Belgravia in Kimberley, a few kilometres from the hospital.

She was buried last Thursday at her home in Perth village,in Kuruman.

"There must be some explanation of how all of this happened," Keneilwe's brother, Olebogeng Kgopodithata, said.

Keneilwe's mother, Phemelo Kgopodithata, 67, is caring for her two children, five-year-old Omaatla and Amantle, who is just over a month old and whose health is deteriorating. She spoke of her heartache: "I don't wish for any parents or anybody to go through the pain we are going through."

Kimberley Hospital chief execu-tive officer, Gordon Moncho, has apologised to the family.

He said Keneilwe was at the hospital to breastfeed her baby.

"She accompanied mothers who were nursing their babies every three hours. We will in future have a unique identification for the breastfeeding mothers," he said,

Kimberley police constable Sergio Kock said police had identified Keneilwe through advanced DNA testing because her body was badly decomposed.

He said it was not known how she had ended up hanging in a tree or how she had arrived in Belgravia.

Police are offering a reward for information that could lead to how Keneilwe died. Kock said police had opened an inquest docket into her death. He said the first autopsy had been completed.

Keneilwe was last seen dressed in a brown skirt, blue blouse, grey slippers, with a light blue towel around her waist. The only item found at the scene was a cross-shaped earring she had worn in her left ear.

Several forensic tests have been done and the police are waiting for the final autopsy report.

The investigation continues.
