Mom won't see her son's alleged killer

THE mother of a young meter taxi driver allegedly murdered by a teenager who also stole his vehicle did not attend court proceedings because "it was going to be hard coming face to face with the killer".

Eddie de Beer, 19, appeared in the Witbank Magistrate's Court on Friday over the murder of Rose Mabuza's son, Mpumelelo, 22.

Mpumelelo was killed on February 12, allegedly by De Beer, who had wanted to be transported from eMalahleni to Phalaborwa in Limpopo, where De Beer's parents live.

Police said Mpumelelo arrived with two passengers and De Beer allegedly told him to first drop the passengers at their destinations as he had too much luggage.

Mabuza returned and he and De Beer then went to a certain house in Panorama, also in eMalahleni. While in the house, an argument started, during which De Beer allegedly hit Mpumelelo with a blunt object, killing him.

He then allegedly wrapped Mpumelelo's body and dumped it on the mountains of Graskop before driving in his car, a Toyota Tazz, to Phalaborwa.

A tracking device in the car was used to trace its whereabouts, and it was found in De Beer's possession.

De Beer is expected to appear in the Witbank Magistrate's Court on Thursdayover the murder. He will appear again in Phalaborwa on March 13 for car theft.
