Diepsloot woman loses arm in factory accident

In another incident today, a man lost his leg in a train accident

- A woman’s arm was cut off when it was caught in a mincer at a meat factory in Diepsloot on Monday, paramedics said.

Netcare911 spokesman Jeffrey Wicks said the woman had been feeding meat into a mechanical mincer when her arm became lodged in  the moving parts.

Paramedics stabilised her at the scene and took her by ambulance  to a private hospital in Fourways, north of Johannesburg.

- A man’s leg was torn off on Monday when he fell from a moving train in Germiston on the East Rand, Gauteng paramedics said.

“The man’s right leg had been ripped from its joint, almost at the hip, and it immediately appeared that there would be no chance of saving the limb,” said ER24 spokeswoman Vanessa Jackson.

She said the man fell underneath the train.

“Paramedics found him lying next to the train tracks on the gravel where he was being stabilised by the local fire and rescue workers,” she said.

The man, believed to be in his early 20s, was alert throughout assessment and treatment.

“He needed extensive treatment and was airlifted to the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital.”

Jackson said the hospital had confirmed the leg would not be reattached.
