Another 'bogus' medic appears in court

THE seventh alleged bogus doctor, a Democratic Republic of Congo national, appeared in court yesterday on charges of fraud and practising without a valid practice number.

Malandala Lubanda, 30, was arrested in Lebanon in Mabopane, North West, on Tuesday after he evaded a dragnet during the raid on alleged bogus doctors on February 9 this year.

Lieutenant Colonel Leonard Hlathi of Mpumalanga provincial police said Lubanda appeared in the Siyabuswa magistrate's court yesterday and his case was postponed to June 21 for further investigation. The case has been transferred to the Middelburg magistrate's court, where he will appear with the rest of his co-accused.

The other arrested alleged bogus doctors are: Eweoye and Rasheed Olawale Aremu, 42, who are reportedly qualified medical practitioners and face charges of fraud and corruption.

Additional charges of impersonating a medical practitioner and indecent assault for treating patients and providing them with medication, were levelled at Daniele Monde, 42, Okafor Chukhlumeka, 42, and Valentine Chike Ezulu, 34, and Baladale Olutu. Monde from Zambia has since skipped bail and is believed to have left the country.

Hlathi said investigators still have to verify the qualification certificates of the accused.
