Mayor in row over wheels

GREATER Tubatse municipality mayor Mahlake Nkosi has allegedly instructed that a new car be bought for his official duties, choosing not to use the one used by his predecessor

The car that was used by the former mayor is said to be in good condition.

Nkosi, who was appointed mayor two weeks ago, has allegedly hired a car at the municipality's expense.

The hired car will cost the municipality R48,000 for a period of 15 days.

Sowetan has learnt that Nkosi had hired a Discovery 4 from Avis in Johannesburg, which arrived at the municipality on June 3 and is set to be returned on June 24.

Over and above that, Nkosi had allegedly also instructed the purchase of a new Mercedes ML 350 valued at more than R700,000 as the mayoral car.

His predecessor, Ralepane Mamekoa, was using a VW Toureg, which is standing idle on the municipal premises.

The car is still in good condition and it is unknown whether it will be auctioned.

Nkosi allegedly did all this without the approval of council. He also made sure the car arrived on the day of his swearing in last Friday.

A source said much as they understood Nkosi wanted a car for his mayoral duties, it was unnecessary for him to buy another car while there was an official car for the municipality.

The municipality had, in the past two years been using overdrafts after it ran out of money.

Acting municipal manager Lemon Phala could not be reached for comment.

Municipal spokesperson Hendrik Coetzer said it was allowed for the new mayor to get a hired car "as long as the rental would not exceed a month".

Nkosi said there was nothing wrong in his getting a car to assist him to execute his duties.

ANC provincial secretary Joe Maswanganyi reacted yesterday by urging municipal officials to do things "by the book".
