Gauteng prioritises roads infrastructure

THE Gauteng department of roads and transport plans on investing heavily in the development of roads infrastructure with a view to better connect the province's towns and rural areas.

MEC Ismail Vadi said the department will start with, among others:

  • Completing Cayman Road towards the "Eye of Africa", which links Heidelberg and Vereeniging and the "Eye of Africa" tourism attraction centre,
  • Upgrade of the road between Wierda Road and Laudium, Pretoria.
  • Construction of William Nicol from Witkoppen to PWV5, which will create a link between Sandton and Diepsloot, and
  • Construction of Malibongwe Drive, which will help ease traffic congestion from Lanseria Airport to the N14 and N1.

"Roads maintenance in Gauteng has been neglected for some time. The department has re-prioritised the maintenance component of its work.

"We allocated almost R1billion in the next financial year to fund this programme," said Vadi.
