Airport hub to create more jobs

THE Gauteng department of economic development is gearing up to get citizens working and earning money.

The province plans to create a 135000m² manufacturing space at OR Tambo International Airport, where local and foreign jewellery manufactures can produce high-end gold, diamond, platinum and other semi-precious metals for export markets.

MEC for economic development Qedani Mahlangu said: "We anticipate to attract between R150million and R300million in investment."

Airports Company SA is planning to develop a duty-free city at the airport.

Mahlangu said her department was also embracing a major investment project to build a new steel mill in Ekurhuleni.

She said the province has been supporting Asambe Steel Corporation to set up business in the province and create an estimated 1000 jobs.

Mahlangu said that in line with government's efforts to increase the number of people receiving anti-retroviral (ARV) treatment, and with the expected increase for a need of affordable generic drugs to treat chronic diseases, it was time Gauteng took the lead in developing a local pharmaceutical manufacturing industry.

"We are talking to investors in Mexico, US, Qatar and India to create capacity to manufacture these drugs."

She said about 50000 full- time jobs will be created for the communities of Katlehong, Tsakane, Thokoza, Duduza and Magagula Heights.
