Announcing Chetty's expulsion, Dube said her programme to restore uMsunduzi municipality back to its former glory as the respectable capital of KwaZulu-Natal was on course.

"Today (yesterday) we have taken a decision to fire one of the officials found guilty of contributing to the collapse of governance and administration in this municipality.

"He has been found guilty on all counts which included irregular and unauthorised expenditure which contributed to the financial instability within this municipality.

"There are also pending disciplinary hearings against many other officials which must be speeded up and concluded," Dube said.

"We expect every official from the uMsunduzi municipality to look after the interests of the community and comply with all regulations aimed at promoting good and clean governance. We expect senior managers to be the pillars of support and to lead by example.

"We are waging a real war against maladministration, mismanagement and corruption in uMsunduzi. We will eliminate all the bad elements that have disgraced this city. We cannot expect those who have presided over the collapse of this municipality to be the ones to guide it out of its predicament," Dube said.

She also emphasised that possible criminal charges and civil recovery procedures will be considered against those who may have resigned - including former municipal manager Rob Haswell.
