Radio station out to help poor pupils

AN SABC radio station in Mpumalanga, Ligwalagwala FM, has embarked on a back-to-school campaign that will see 85 learners receiving school uniforms

The station says pupils from five primary schools around Mpumalanga will have uniforms delivered to them in the last week of this month.

Station manager Rio Mabunda says the uniforms will include shirts, pants, tunics, socks and shoes.

"The schools have been asked to identify pupils that come from impoverished families so that they could benefit from the campaign," Mabunda says.

The campaign is a partnership with Ground Zero Park and the office of Premier David Mabuza.

Benjamin Primary School in Matsulu near Nelspruit will receive a cash sponsorship of R25 000 from Ground Zero Matsulu Park.

"The plight of the poor of our communities will continue to touch and call us to action. As a caring station we saw fit to ignite hope where there is none," Mabunda says.

The tour will be launched in Ferni at Mabombe Primary School on January 24, and then move to Nhlazatshe Timeleni Primary the next day.

Benjamin Primary is the next destination, where Mabuza will do the handover, Magudu Primary on the 27th and finally Sabie at Lindani primary school on January 28.

Benjamin Primary principal SD Lekhuleni said: "This is a very good initiative to strengthen our education system.

"We thank everyone involved for promoting education," he said.
