Five women up for grant money fraud

Allegedly selling birth certificates to women who had no children so that they could apply for grant money

FIVE women appeared in the Butterworth magistrate's court on fraud charges yesterday, Eastern Cape police said.

Captain Jackson Manatha said one woman was granted R1000 bail and the others were released on warning. The case was postponed to February 16.

The woman granted bail was allegedly selling birth certificates to women who had no children so that they could apply for grant money.

She was attached to home affairs at Butterworth, Manatha said. He said the four women arrested were from the Mthatha area and they would allegedly buy four or five certificates at a time.
