Girl's act leads to arrest of heist suspects

SCHOOLGIRL witnessed a robbery taking place at a secondary school in Kagiso

She acted swiftly after spotting the two robbers dashing to the VW Jetta parked behind the school yard.

She took down the car registration numbers as the getaway car sped off. The robbers did not hide their faces.

That vital piece of evidence is what helped the police investigating the crime because they were able to track down the alleged thugs.

The car was later spotted at Tshepisong in Roodepoort, where Mxolisi Mgomezulu, 36 and Dumisani Ndzimande, 30, were apprehended with the money still in the boot. The getaway car was also confiscated during the arrests.

Thabo Makhene, 49, a Grade 10 biology teacher at the same school, was fingered as the alleged mastermind during the interrogation of the other two suspects this week.

Makhene was arrested in the early hours of last Thursday and remained at Kagiso police station until his appearance in court on Monday.

Yesterday the three faced charges of armed robbery when they appeared in the Krugersdorp magistrate's court in Mogale City.

They were not asked to plead. Their case was postponed to next Monday when an identification parade will be held. They will remain in custody at Kagiso police station.

It has emerged that Mngomezulu and Ndzimande were currently on bail for armed robbery and their case will be heard in the same court.

Makhene will apply for bail at his next court appearance.

"We need to thank the girl who assisted the police," Kagiso police spokesperson Solomon Sibiya said outside court.
