Smoke from brazier kills two

THE police in Limpopo are investigating the death of two people who were found dead on their beds at Luckau village on Tuesday.

Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Ronel Otto said the deceased, Buti William Mahlangu, 27, and Ntokozo John Moima, 13, appeared to have inhaled toxic smoke while asleep, but investigations were still under way.

Otto said nothing was burnt in the house but that smoke was suspected to have been the cause of death.

"According to preliminary investigations the deceased were last seen when they went to bed the night before. We suspect they died from inhalation of brazier smoke as there was a brazier with ash in the house near their bed."

She said a postmortem would determine the cause of death.

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Amon Mashigo appealed to the community to be careful when going to sleep at night and not leave braziers or candles burning.

"We appeal to everyone to be careful, especially (during the) cooler and rainy weather of the past few weeks," he said.

Parents were also advised not to allow their children to go swimming unsupervised as most dams and rivers in the province were full to capacity because of the rain.

Otto said an inquest docket had been opened for further investigations.
