Drive to boost service delivery, cut costs

SOME municipalities in Limpopo might be phased out as the government is pushing for the re-configuration of the local government plan to boost service delivery and cut costs.

Governance and administration cluster chairperson and provincial MEC for local government and housing Soviet Lekganyane yesterday admitted there were municipalities that were "unnecessary" because they depended on indigents' revenue, which could not pay for municipal services.

Lekganyane said it was necessary to rationalise the number of municipalities.

But he noted that some municipalities did not have credible revenue sources to perform well as compared with those that had revenue sources.

Three municipalities, Mutale, Fetakgomo and Aganang, were classified among those struggling to raise revenue, but were performing better than others.

Local government analyst Lucas Nemutanzhela said the decision to cut municipalities might be good but he warned the step would be unpopular among some people.
