No bail for extortion case cops

TWO police officers who allegedly extorted money from a Nigerian man were refused bail by the Durban magistrate's court, The Mercury reported yesterday.

The two officers, from the Durban dog unit, were arrested during a sting operation set up by the Hawks two weeks ago.

Warrant Officer Thambisani Mbongeni Dladla, 41, and Sergeant Jabulani Ngcobo, 42, were allegedly caught extorting R20000 from a Nigerian man who runs a tavern in Durban.

Both men are narcotics dog handlers. The officers appeared in court on Wednesday to apply for bail.

The Mercury reported that investigating officer Captain Jageesh Devnarian Singh testified in court that the two men were allegedly part of a group involved in extortion for the past five years.

He told the court that the officers would allegedly search the homes of foreigners to find drugs. The syndicate would allegedly ask for money from the foreigners to avoid arrest. They were also allegedly threatened with being shot.

The Hawks learned of this when a Nigerian man told his lawyer that Ngcobo and Dladla had framed him about possessing cocaine and asked for money. The man's lawyer told the Hawks and a sting was set up, with the Nigerian man being given marked notes.

Singh said Dladla and Ngcobo went to the man's tavern, where money was handed over. The officers were arrested after R10000 each was allegedly found on them.

The matter was postponed to December 2 for further investigation.
