MEC stern warning

THE deadline for teachers and all employees of the KwaZulu-Natal department of education to present themselves and submit qualification certificates is today and those who have missed it face the risk of not getting paid.

The noon deadline was aimed at completing the headcount and qualifications data of every single teacher and department employee.

Provincial MEC Senzo Mchunu yesterday confirmed that his department was taking a no-nonsense approach to those who do not comply.

"We are going to stop the salaries of those who have not been counted or submitted their qualifications," Mchunu said.

"Their silence can only mean they do not exist."

Mchunu said this exercise was to make sure that all its employees were alive and kicking.

"The counting process and verifying of qualifications is to make sure that the department is paying the right people with the right qualifications," he said.

"We are going to leave no stone unturned to make sure that ghost employees are exposed and that the people we are paying are alive and working for the department."

He said in the case of an employee who had been and still is on leave, the deadline had been extended to accommodate them.

The headcount was conducted during July 15 to August 6 this year.

To accommodate those who were not at work during the headcount season, the department gave further opportunity to present themselves until today at midday.

"You cannot say you were on leave. It is important that every employee is counted, that is why we have extended the deadline to give all employees time to be counted," Mchunu said.

Employees should report to the provincial treasury internal audit at Nomalanga House, 214 Langalibalele Street, Pietermaritzburg, with their Identity Document or passport.

They must also bring their original certificates of qualification or certified copies thereof.

This should happen by no later than 12pm today.

A second phase of the process will be the verifying of the certificates received to make sure that they are legal and genuine.

Last month the department fired 53 bogus teachers who had been working for the department for years with fraudulent certificates.
