The US were level at 2-2 with Slovenia in Friday's Group C match in Johannesburg when Mali referee Koman Coulibaly controversially wiped out Maurice Edu's strike in the dying seconds.
"For people, especially our American fans back home, to be so up in arms shows that one, they care, and two, they are starting to learn about how it works," Howard said.
The US have so far drawn 1-1 with England and the 2-2 draw with Slovenia has left them needing to beat Algeria on Wednesday to advance to the last 16.
The US reached the 2002 World Cup quarterfinals, but as Howard also noted, they have plenty of unfinished business before escaping Group C.
"There's a long way to go for us to even get out of our group. For us to think past that is probably silly on our part," he said.
The US team has tried to forget about the disallowed goal and focus on Algeria.
Howard said the Americans have always suspected that their final fate for advancing to the last 16 was going to be decided against the north Africans.
