Support the HIV campaign

AS the government kicks off its campaign to test about a million South Africans a month for 15 months for HIV, it is time for all of us to be true to our tradition of social mobilisation and join the drive.

At first glance the figure seems to be a dream but in 2007 in Tanzania, about 500000 people were tested every month for six months.

South Africans will be able to do better. Chances are good that the target will be reached.

This will be an enormous step forward in fighting HIV-Aids. It should help make possible what so far appeared impossible - to make HIV testing as normal as blood-pressure testing.

This approach will open up massive opportunities for managing the nation's health. People who test positive will be informed and can make the right health choices and the government and health facilities will have a more accurate estimation of people's needs. This will help them plan and deliver services more efficiently.

Above all, testing is the right thing to do.

Let's all go out and support this initiative. We can all help to make it a huge success.

As with the football World Cup, we should all want to say afterwards: I did my part.
