KWAZULU-NATAL first lady May Mkhize has challenged the people of the province to ensure that violence never happens again.

Mkhize was speaking in Pietermaritzburg yesterday during a conference at the Msunduzi Museum to remember the victims of political violence that ravaged the province from 1987 to 1994. The conference was attended by survivors, community leaders and academics.

"When I speak about violence I speak with humility and not without a degree of pain," Mkhize said.

She said it did not matter where one was during the so-called "seven-day war" that claimed countless lives.

The infamous carnage from March 25 to April 2 1990, resulted in hundreds of deaths, homes destroyed and a stream of refugees from the Midlands when ANC and IFP supporters clashed.

"What is sad is that when you meet any of the people who were directly affected by this war none of them, to this day, know what the fighting was about," Mkhize said.

She challenged history teachers to determine the underlying causes of that political violence.
