Hail Proteas!

THE Proteas have confounded one and all with their comprehensive thrashing of India in the first Test that finished in Nagpur yesterday.

THE Proteas have confounded one and all with their comprehensive thrashing of India in the first Test that finished in Nagpur yesterday.

Preparations for the tour could not have been worse - the coach resigning, the selectors axed and speculation there was still divisions within the side.

India has become a graveyard for many touring teams over the years, so hats off to stand-in coach Corrie van Zyl and selectors Kepler Wessels and Gerald Majola and, last but not least, Graeme Smith and his team for defying the odds and winning by an innings and six runs.

It was a great team effort, but special mention must be made of the batting of Hashim Amla (253 not out) and Jacques Kallis (173). Add to this the devastating bowling of Dale Steyn, who took a career-best 10 wickets and there's no reason the Proteas will not shortly reclaim the No 1 ranking in world cricket.
