KWAZULU-NATAL boasts a surprisingly large number of successful maskandi musicians.

Now, new maskandi singer Siphithiphithi is following in the footsteps of groups such as Shwi Nomtekhala, the late Mgqumeni Khumalo, Amageza Amahle, Phuzekhemisi and a host of others.

Born Mziwendoda Mkhize, Siphithiphithi has just dropped his debutalbum entitled Load Shedding/ Uzodel'makhasana.

With his album sounding like other offerings in the genre on the market, Mkhize hopes to stand apart.

The lyrics on his album explore the theme of love and also look at other universal themes that affect us all.

"In the track Load Shedding I am not criticising the government," explains Mkhize, who hails from Msinga.

"It is just a reminder that there are still many places that don't have any electricity.

"People living in the rural areas and in shacks also need electricity."

Mkhize was interested in both local and international music from an early age.

"I was passionate about all genres, both locally and internationally, since I wanted to be a DJ."

He says when he realised that it was not easy to get on radio as a deejay, he decided to pursue a music career.

Mkhize came to Jozi in 1988. But he says he finds it a challenge to clinch a recording deal.

"I collected information about various musicians.

"I kept newspapers cuttings about musicians and researched various musicians.

"I then met a lot of musicians and interviewed them."

He says he did this on the side, while he worked as a senior supervisor in an engineering firm.

But he soon landed a prominent position on Ukhozi FM as a music analyst on the show called Isigqi Sesizwe .

"Being an analyst on Ukhozi FM meant I made a name for myself.

"I analysed music generally from bubblegum to gospel."

Mkhize is not only a musician but has business interests too.

He owns a music production company called Izidlamlilo Music Productions and a security firm called Izidlamlilo Security Services.
