Maritzburg eager to defend title

MARITZBURG United, who narrowly escaped relegation last season, promised yesterday to defend their Uthukela Mayoral Cup title in Ladysmith on July 26.

MARITZBURG United, who narrowly escaped relegation last season, promised yesterday to defend their Uthukela Mayoral Cup title in Ladysmith on July 26.

The other teams in the day-long event are Premiership returnees Jomo Cosmos, AmaZulu and an Uthukela Invitational XI. United take on Ezenkosi in the first game at 9am while Usuthu face the invitational side at noon.

The final is at 4pm.

Younnis Kadodia, a spokesperson for the Team of Choice, said they were grateful to be invited back.

"This gives us a great chance to defend our title we won after beating Thanda Royal Zulu in the final. Our first game this time around is going to be a tough one as Cosmos are a very strong team," he said.

"This will also be good game time for our players as the tournament comes just 10 days before the league kicks off."

Kadodia said United have made two signings so far in Byron Hendricks and James Madidilane.

Cosmos will renew the club's supporters' branch in the area on the Saturday at the Ladysmith Town Hall, starting at 3pm.
