AN AWAITING-TRIAL prisoner in Limpopo was this week sentenced to an effective 16 years imprisonment after he was found guilty of a fresh charge of sexually assaulting a fellow inmate.

The incident happened at the Lebowakgomo police holding cells in 2007. Charges were successfully pressed against Abram Maleka, 26, after he allegedly indecently assaulted the victim while the two were sharing a cell. Forensic proof indicated that the victim had been penetrated.

But the sentence does not form part of the initial charge. Maleka was initially arrested for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and was awaiting trial. Maleka is still awaiting trial for the initial charge. - Frank Maponya
