Wrong move

AN ATTEMPT at the weekend to force journalists covering American R&B artist R Kelly to sign a document censoring their coverage has rightly raised the ire of editors.

AN ATTEMPT at the weekend to force journalists covering American R&B artist R Kelly to sign a document censoring their coverage has rightly raised the ire of editors.

The South African National Editors Forum has slammed the move by the organisers of Kelly's concerts to make reporters sign the document "committing them to censorship and several stringent conditions in direct violation of media freedom, a right guaranteed in our Constitution".

Signing the document would have perpetuated a lamentable practice by some overseas artists to lord over journalists in host countries, especially those in Africa.

We therefore support Sanef's call to the artist not to insist on curbs that would normally be frowned upon by journalists back in the US.
